What is ADD or ADHD? Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the current term for a specific developmental disorder seen in both children and adults.

People with ADHD have deficits in the following areas:

  • Behavioral inhibition (self-control).
  • Sustained attention (staying focused for a long time).
  • Resistance to distraction (staying on task).
  • Regulation of onešs activity level to the demands of a situation (hyperactivity or restlessness).

This disorder has had numerous labels over the past century, including hyperactive child syndrome, hyperkinetic reaction of childhood, minimal brain dysfunction, and attention deficit disorder (with or without hyperactivity).

So what is ADD?
Technically, ADD is an outdated name for the same disorder. Between 1980-1987, ADHD was called Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-Third Edition (DSM-III) of the American Psychiatric Association.
